Curious About the Latest in Organic Farming? Join Our Winter Webinar Series!
Join us for an engaging webinar series exploring key topics in sustainable and regenerative agriculture. Each monthly session features expert guest speakers sharing their insights, research, and practical strategies to help you strengthen your farm’s productivity and resilience. Discover how grazing cover crops, crop rotations, and nutrient management can all work to improve soil health and control weeds.
About the First Session: Understanding Soil Nutrients – How Fertility Influences Cover Cropping Success
Understanding how nitrogen and carbon move through soil is key to building productive and resilient organic cropping systems. This webinar will explore the fundamentals of N and C cycling in organic agriculture, highlighting how these processes influence soil fertility, nutrient availability, and long-term sustainability. Additionally, Alessia Marchesan will walk us through recent research into cover cropping in the western prairies, including how strategic cover cropping can enhance nutrient cycling and soil health to unlock the full potential of organic systems.
About the Speaker: Alessia Marchesan, Student, University of Alberta
Alessia Marchesan is a PhD student at the University of Alberta studying carbon storage and greenhouse gas emissions from organic crop production. Her primary interest is in soil health and the ability for soil to provide agro-ecosystem services that benefit organic production. Alessia is currently involved in a reduced tillage and integrated crop-livestock system research trial at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Lacombe research center, in association with the Organic Federation of Canada.
Please note that this webinar was originally scheduled with Dr. Gladis Zinati of the Rodale Institute, who was set to present “The Vegetable Systems Trial: A Long-Term Trial Linking Soil Health to Crop Health.” Due to a recent professional transition, Dr. Zinati will no longer be presenting this session. However, the Rodale Institute will be sharing insights on this important topic at a future date. Stay tuned for updates!
