Cover Cropping for Weed Management

Cover crops can be beneficial for a number of reasons: by keeping living roots in the soil and keeping the soil covered, they can help with wind and water erosion, soil compaction, nutrient cycling, and improving soil organic matter. They have also been touted as a tool for weed suppression. However, how well do they work against weeds, in reality? In this webinar, Jed Franklin will be leading a discussion on what he’s found works well, better, and best in the world of cover cropping and weed management. Jed has tried all sorts of strategies to control for wild oat and Canada thistle in his grain farm over the last 17 years and he’ll be sharing with you his learnings over that time period. Come prepared to share your experiences while we troubleshoot cover cropping challenges.

Jed Franklin

Jed Franklin farms 800 acres near Chetwynd, BC. He’s been certified organic for 17 years and in that time he’s read many books and watched many talks about nutrient balancing, cover cropping and weed management for organic farmers. He’s also experimented on his farm, which is where he’s learned the most. Over the years, he’s tried continuous cropping, cover cropping with yellow sweet clover, red clover, and alfalfa, underseeding alfalfa, summerfallowing, and heavy tillage. He’s observed the impact these practices have had on wild oat and Canada thistle populations on his farm and is happy to share his observations with other farmers who face the similar circumstances.
