SUMMARY:Ft Vermillion Crop Walk: Weed Seedling Identification in Organic Fa
 rming
DESCRIPTION:The same content is offered twice - June 25th is at MARA in Ft
Vermillion. Join us for a field event focusing on weed seedling identifica
tion\, a critical skill for early-season weed management\, and for an intr
oduction to Organic Alberta's new Summer Weed Survey program. This hands-o
n event will guide participants through the recognition of key weed specie
s at the seedling stage\, when control is most effective. \n\nPresenter:
Dr. Chris Neeser\n\nDr. Chris Neeser\, a research scientist with Alberta A
griculture and Irrigation\, specializes in weed management and pest survei
llance. His work focuses on monitoring changes in weed populations\, detec
ting invasive species\, and developing effective\, sustainable weed manage
ment strategies. Dr. Neeser's research emphasizes collaboration and innova
tion\, including the use of drone technology for field scouting\, all aime
d at helping Alberta producers manage weeds efficiently while minimizing e
 nvironmental impact.\n\nPresenter: Natalie LaForest\n\nNatalie\, Organic A
lberta's Weed Specialist and a PhD candidate at the University of Alberta\
, researches carabid (ground beetle) abundance\, biodiversity\, and their
role in weed seed control through seed bank regulation\, emphasizing the i
mportance of vegetated field margins and diverse crop rotations. She has p
resented at agriculture conferences across Canada. Originally from Drayton
Valley\, Natalie holds an Ecology diploma from Lakeland College and a Bac
helor of Agriculture Science from the University of Saskatchewan. With han
ds-on experience as a weed inspector with her local county and with a vege
tation management company serving the oil and gas\, forestry\, and agricul
ture sectors\, Natalie currently serves as Organic Alberta's Weed Speciali
 st.\n\nOpen Discussion\n\nFollowing the weed identification event\, partic
ipants are invited to join an informal open discussion. This is a valuable
opportunity to connect with fellow producers\, share local observations\,
and exchange practical strategies for managing early-season weeds.\n\nAdd
itional Information\n\nThis event is free to attend\, and lunch (BBQ) will
be included. Specific details such as location will be shared by email up
on registration for the event. The event will be near Ft Vermillion\, AB.
If you can't register online\, call us at (780) 285-0911.
