ans’ trust in the food system is difficult as it is complex and shifts o
ver time in relation to many evolving factors. Through a survey of Alberta
ns and Canadians the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity (CCFI) provides re
levant\, reliable and consistent information about public trust issues in
the agriculture and food system. CCFI’s 2024 survey provides trends of A
lbertans’ perspectives of Canada’s agriculture and food system. This h
elps the agriculture industry with decision making and communication effor
ts to address key areas of concern for Albertans.\nThese results be presen
ted by Ashley Bruner\, Director of Research and Stakeholder Engagement wit
h the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity.\nWe will also hear from Melody G
arner-Skiba\, Executive Director of the Intensive Livestock Working Group
about what actions their group has been undertaking to support building pu
blic trust in Alberta.\nWebinar Logistics: \nThis event will take place o

SUMMARY:Cover Crops and Weed Management: What Works Well\, Better\, and Bes
 t - Winter Webinar #2
DESCRIPTION:Cover Cropping for Weed Management\n\nCover crops can be benefi
cial for a number of reasons: by keeping living roots in the soil and keep
ing the soil covered\, they can help with wind and water erosion\, soil co
mpaction\, nutrient cycling\, and improving soil organic matter. They have
also been touted as a tool for weed suppression. However\, how well do th
ey work against weeds\, in reality? In this webinar\, Jed Franklin will be
leading a discussion on what he’s found works well\, better\, and best
in the world of cover cropping and weed management. Jed has tried all sort
s of strategies to control for wild oat and Canada thistle in his grain fa
rm over the last 17 years and he’ll be sharing with you his learnings ov
er that time period. Come prepared to share your experiences while we trou
bleshoot cover cropping challenges.\n\nJed Franklin\n\nJed Franklin farms
800 acres near Chetwynd\, BC. He’s been certified organic for 17 years a
nd in that time he’s read many books and watched many talks about nutrie
nt balancing\, cover cropping and weed management for organic farmers. He
’s also experimented on his farm\, which is where he’s learned the mos
 t. Over the years\, he’s tried continuous cropping\, cover cropping with
  yellow sweet clover\, red clover\, and alfalfa\, underseeding alfalfa\, s
ummerfallowing\, and heavy tillage. He’s observed the impact these pract
ices have had on wild oat and Canada thistle populations on his farm and i
s happy to share his observations with other farmers who face the similar
 circumstances.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nWinter Webinar Series\n\nThis is the second w

SUMMARY:Compost Soil Interactions: Nutrient Availability\, Organic Matter\,
and Phosphorus Solutions\, Winter Webinar #3
DESCRIPTION:Compost Soil Interactions: Nutrient Availability\, Organic Matt
er\, and Phosphorus Solutions\n\nComposting transforms organic waste into
biologically active amendments that enhance nutrient availability and soil
health. This session aims to explore compost influence carbon and phospho
rus dynamics\, including the breakdown of materials and their interaction
with the soil they are applied to. We’ll look at how compost contributes
to soil organic matter pools and how it can increase phosphorus bioavaila
bility\, especially in systems without synthetic inputs. The session concl
udes with insights from ongoing research using rapid composting and co-com
posting with recycled phosphorus sources like struvite to address soil fer
 tility challenges in organic agriculture.\n\nAmanda Desrochers\n\nAmanda i
s a Master’s student in Soil Science at the University of Manitoba with
a background in biology and regenerative farming. Her research with Dr Ino
ka Amarakoon and Dr. Joanne Thiessen Martens with the Organic Science Clus
ter 4 focuses on creating enriched composts using recycled phosphorus to c
lose nutrient loops in organic agriculture. She is passionate about bridgi
ng soil and human health\, growing nutrient-dense food\, and building resi
lient systems that restore and optimize soil health.\n\nWinter Webinar Ser
ies\n\nThis is the third webinar in a series being held by Organic Alberta
. Our monthly Zoom meetings bring in different speakers on activities goin
g on in the organic farming world.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Bin: Understanding the Field Crop Seed System - Bauta Fa

DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Bin: Understanding the Field Crop Seed System\nBin-r
un seed\, the portion of the crop that farmers save for next year’s plan
ting\, remains an important part of most farm operations\, but there’s a
lot more to the story of where our field crop seed comes from! In this we
binar\, we’re turning our attention to field crops— like oats\, dry-be
ans\, and forages —to ask the question:\n\nWhere do our seeds come from?
\n\nThis webinar will feature presentations from a public plant breeder\,
a certified seed grower and an industry leader. The conversation will prov
ide an overview of how the formal seed system works for different field cr
ops and dig into some of the economic factors. From breeding and variety r
egistration to certified seed production and distribution\, each step play
s a critical role to supply farmers with high quality seeds.\n\nOur seed s
ystem also faces specific economic\, regulatory and technical challenges\,
especially when it comes to supplying seeds that are regionally-adapted\,
genetically diverse\, that thrive in organic and regenerative systems or
are meant to supply local and specialty markets.\n\nWe will discuss the tr
adeoffs that farmers balance when saving or sourcing their field crop seed
\, and explore how we can build more resilience into the seed system that
is the backbone of Canadian agriculture.\n\nSpeakers:\n\nDr. Jamie Larsen\
 , AAFC\n\nHeather Kerschbaumer\, Golden Acre Seeds\n\nScott Shiels\, Grain
Millers\n\nPresentations will be in English with translated slides.\n\n&n

DESCRIPTION:Northern Latitudes: Sourcing and Saving Seeds from Similar Clim

 ems are complex—shaped by geography\, labour\, economics\, policy\, and
