SUMMARY:Soil Fertility in Action: Liming and Humic Acid - In the Field and
 In the Classroom
DESCRIPTION:About the Event\nAt 9:00 am at the La Crete Heritage Centre\, j
oin soil researchers Dr. Miles Dyck and Dr. Linda Gorim for two technical
classroom talks on liming\, humic acid and soil fertility. After a free lu
nch\, jump on the bus tour to see MARA’s liming trials in a producer’s
field.\nTopics include:\n\n\n Soil pH and liming\, covering different ty
pes of lime\, uses\, and recommended application rates.\n Humic acid’s
role in soil health.\n Integrating perennial forages into annual cropping
rotations for improved soil health\, based on long-term research results
from the Breton Plots.\n\nWith expertise in cover crops and soil managemen
t\, Dr. Linda Gorim will be able to answer any questions on cover crop mix
es\, sourcing cover crop seed\, and what works in Mackenzie County.\nBring
your questions\, challenges\, and experiences. Whether you're looking to
troubleshoot a specific field issue or explore new soil management practic
es\, this is an opportunity to have your questions answered by leading res
earchers and see a liming field trial in-person.\nAbout the Speakers\nDr.
Miles Dyck is a professor of soil science at the University of Alberta\, r
esearching the impacts of agricultural management on soil and crop health
and teaching courses in soil physics and soil formation. Growing up on the
family farm near Swift Current\, Sask.\, he developed an intense curiosit
y about soils and an appreciation for the hard work required to run a farm
. He is dedicated to executing and sharing results from farm-relevant rese
arch. \nDr. Linda Gorim is a professor of soil science at the University
of Alberta. She grew up on a farm in Cameroon\, West Africa\, where she ob
tained her BSc in Zoology. She then obtained the Fiat Panis scholarship\,
which enabled her to obtain her MSc and subsequently a PhD in Agriculture
from the University of Hohenheim\, Stuttgart\, Germany\, working on cover
cropping and crop water stress. Prior to her current position\, Dr. Gorim
did a Postdoc and served as a Research Associate with the lentil Breeder\,
Dr. Albert Vandenberg\, University of Saskatchewan\, working on the ident
ification of drought tolerance traits in wild lentil germplasm that can be
introgressed into cultivated lentil. She is currently an Assistant Profes
sor and the Western Grains Research Foundation Chair in Cropping Systems.
Her work addresses farmers' problems via the optimization of farm inputs a
 nd practices \n\n&nbsp\;
