Organic Grain Prices

Pricing

Below are the highest organic grain prices (spot market prices unless otherwise indicated) gathered recently by Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. Sources include farmers and buyers who have shared recent sales prices and the USDA National Organic Grain & Feedstuffs Report. Prices do not include transportation unless otherwise indicated. Conventional prices come from a mix of sources. USDA prices are in US dollars; the rest of the prices are Canadian.

February 2016

Many of the prices below come from the organic grain buyers' panel at Prairie Organics: Think Whole Farm at the University of Manitoba on February 18th. Speakers included Tristan Gill from Westaqua, Terry Tyson from Grain Millers and Jason Freeman from Farm Direct Co-op. According to the buyers, in-demand crops include feed barley, milling oats, brown and golden flax, yellow mustard and yellow peas. Apparently the entire yellow mustard crop is destined for Europe. Organic pea and oat prices are expected to climb further next year. Forage peas seem to be in demand right now and are commanding very high prices in the marketplace. The organic price advantage over conventional is shrinking for lentils with high conventional prices. Panelists suggested that purchasing a Kwik Clean machine to clean grains to 95% before leaving the farm would be a good investment. Organic grain screenings have a value of around $170 MT. You can sell the screenings to neighbouring organic livestock producers. Drying grains to the appropriate moisture level is critical for realizing premium prices. HRSW should be dried to 13.5% moisture, beans should be dried to 16%, lentils to 13.5%, red lentils to 12%.

Conventional prices come from a mix of sources. USDA prices are in US dollars; the rest of the prices are Canadian.

As we move beyond the harvest window, it is becoming apparent that some organic crops will be in increasingly short supply over the coming year. Our picks for the hot organic crops of 2016 are mustard, brown flax, and hemp and to a lesser extent, milling oats and feed barley. Producers should do their homework with buyers before planting these crops in 2016. What's hot now, may not be hot when you're trying to sell into the marketplace next year. Organic golden flax, one of the hot crops of 2014-15, is one such cautionary tale; it is now in an oversupply position in the marketplace, as is hard red spring wheat. The organic price advantage for peas has disappeared almost overnight as the major pea growing region of the world (India) has underproduced. At $14/bu, the price of conventional peas is now close to the organic price.

 December 2015

All organic crops are close to double the price of their conventional counterparts. The price of organic flax is on the rise, as is that for organic mustard. Statistics Canada data indicate that a considerably smaller mustard crop was harvested in Canada in 2015. It seems that organic mustard is also in short supply, high demand, or both. Organic wheat prices are stable.

November 2015 - Organic Grain prices

In the US, organic feed soybean prices have sunk to the lowest level in three years, presumably as a result of the large harvest in India which is responsible for 45% of the organic soybeans exported to the US. Canada can lay claim to only 7% of US organic soybean imports.

October 2015 - Organic Grain prices

The price of organic oats has gone up slightly for the first time in a very long while as has organic hemp. The price of Hard Red Spring wheat has come down relative to last year as buyers stored more grain while importing some lower cost wheat from overseas. Feed grain prices, including corn and soy, but not barley, are down relative to where they were at harvest in 2014 and 2013. According to Grain Millers, prices for some of the organic specialty crops are starting to come down from recent highs as the size of the harvest becomes known.

September 2015 - Organic Grain Prices

Organic feed soybean prices are down from last fall by $2/bu, likely as a result of the larger than anticipated organic soybean harvest in India. Prices for most other field crops have remained stable. Organic feedstuffs including corn, barley, wheat and peas were exactly the same at this time last year. Market demand remains high for specialty crops like mustard seed.

July 2015 - Organic Grain Prices

Demand and prices for organic wheat - both feed and food continue to be down. The dry weather in the Canadian Prairie and in the US mid-west is dampening expectations of a bumper crop. It's hard to predict how crops will do this early in the year, but if things continue as they are now, we can expect some good prices for organic pulses and oil seeds in the fall. Dry conditions in Alberta are also creating greater demand for organic feed grains such as barley. Alberta has been hit particularly hard, with some organic livestock producers downsizing herds in the face of hay shortages. Here in Manitoba, we're seeing some decent organic crops although some producers are complaining that the weeds have overtaken the crops. Organic alfalfa producers hoping to capitalize on high hay prices should consider adding composted manure to compensate for the removal of phosphorous from the soil.

June 2015 - Organic Grain Prices

Old crop organic wheat is still plentiful, but organic peas are scarce, leading to a significant price bump. Some specialty crops such as organic mustard are also in demand in the marketplace. So far this year, organic feed prices have been fairly steady, part way between 2013 and 2014 prices.

May 2015 - Organic Grain Prices

Although buyers are purchasing specialty organic grains on the spot market, there is currently little movement of staples such as wheat on the spot market. Last year, many of the key commodity buyers insulated themselves from price fluctuations through higher levels of forward contracting. This situation is likely to persist and growers should consider contracting at least some of their 2015 crop as part of a business risk mitigation strategy. If you decide to contract, look for features such as "Act of God" to protect yourself against extreme weather before or during harvest. There are many more contracting options for organic grains than there was even a year ago.

April 2015 - Organic Grain Prices

The organic grains market appears to be steadier these days - that is the prices are less prone to extremes, yet sellers keep selling and buyers keep buying. When shopping for a buyer, consider asking US buyers to pay (or contract) in US currency. With the Loonie depressed relative to the US dollar, don't leave this 20% on the table.

  • January 2015 - Organic Grain Prices

The divide between conventional and organic prices continues to be significant, with organic prices 160 to 430% higher than conventional. The organic price advantage is being driven by strong demand and a shortfall of organic grains. While brown flax prices are rising towards last year's historic prices, there appears to be little appetite amongst buyers for yellow flax, last year's golden crop.

December 2014 - Organic Grain Prices

Organic feed prices are still trending lower than they were at the same time last year and the year before. However, prices for food grade grains remain steady and high with a good price advantage relative to conventional. Demand for malting barley, food grade wheat, spelt, soybeans and oats is particularly high. Demand for spot purchases of flax is down slightly from last year, presumably because buyers have been able to meet their needs through contracting. Most grain buyers will have their 2015 contracting prices by the end of January.

November 2014 - Organic Grain Prices

Buyers are reporting that golden and brown flax are plentiful this fall as many producers included last year's wonder crop, golden flax, in their 2014 rotation. This is reflected in the price drop from last year which topped $50/bu. The crop of the moment appears to be spelt which is now extremely hard to find. Wheat prices appear to have stabilized with almost all buyers offering similar prices at around $22/bu. Livestock prices remain high and feed prices are still attractive enough to support a strong organic livestock industry although the cost of production for conventional livestock may be even more attractive.
