Organic People

Danny Rempel: Farmer honoured for contributions in organics (April 10) - The Organic Crop Improvement Association Research and Education board has named Danny Rempel of Hodgeville, Sask., this year's outstanding organic farmer.

Ray Bauml: Time to go fishin’ (Aug 09) - Ray Bauml is one of my heroes. To me, Ray was the very spirit of organic. He was gentle and encouraging, wise and practical, and he always had a twinkle in his eye. He passed away July 22.

Organic Pioneer, Victor Chrapko Honoured (Mar 08) - Victor Chrapko was a strong and insistent voice for organic agriculture, both in Alberta and in the larger community. His voice was silenced Feb 20 by a traffic collision while he was hauling hay. Victor will be sorely missed, but his impact will go on.

Marc Loiselle wins outstanding organic farmer of year award (Apr 07) - Vonda area farmer, Marc Loiselle was named Outstanding Organic Farmer of 2007 by the OCIA RnE board at their annual meeting. OCIA (Organic Crop Improvement Association) is one of the world’s foremost organic groups, with offices in Canada, the United States, Latin America, Asia, and Europe. The OCIA Research and Education board developed the Outstanding Organic Farmer of the Year award to honor and showcase talented producers who excel in cropping and livestock practice, who are good stewards of the natural environment and who are committed to the organic community.

Dwayne Woolhouse: Outstanding organic farmer of 2006 (Mar 06) - Dwayne Woolhouse, who farms near Assiniboia, Sask., was recognized for excellence in organic farming at a recent meeting of the Organic Crop Improvement Association International.

Elmer Laird: Organic industry honours one of its visionaries (Nov 06) - Elmer Laird is one of my heroes. He was recently, and deservedly, honoured at Organic Connections 2006 as an organic visionary. Laird began farming organically nearly 40 years ago and has been an active voice linking agriculture, environment and health ever since.

Stan Rowe: Understanding role within nature would help solve world's problems (June 04) - Stan Rowe was a respected botanist, forestry researcher, professor of plant ecology at the University of Saskatchewan, wilderness advocate, conservationist, speaker, author, and one of Canada's strong environmental thinkers. He is also one of my heroes.
