Insects

Hoppers expected this spring in Alberta (Western Producer, Feb '12) - Saskatchewan and Manitoba look safe from grasshoppers this year, according to the 2012 forecast, but Alberta farmers need to beware.

Insect and Disease Management in Organic Crop Systems (MAFRI) - Managing the ecosystem on an organic farm is very challenging. It is made even more complex when factoring in insect and disease pests.

Using insects to assess soil quality (Feb 11) - OACC - In the future, organic farmers may be able to use tiny, wingless insects to help them easily assess the health of their soils.

Organic methods for tackling grasshoppers (May 03) - The prairie grasshopper forecast indicates severe risk in many locations. Sound planning is the key to managing this risk, especially on organic farms. Knowing a few things about grasshoppers will make planning easier. First, grasshoppers aren't all bad. They are important in natural ecosystems, efficiently converting grass to a high protein feed for a variety of creatures, from burrowing owls to coyotes.

Biotic potential can be used to control grasshoppers (Oct 03) - We are depressingly aware of the damage that grasshoppers cause in field crops. We are much less aware of the damage that field crops cause grasshoppers. This change in perspective offers hope that long-term cultural controls for grasshoppers are possible.
