Producers Affected by Excess Moisture and Flooding Getting Help

From the Aug 5, 2011 Broadcast of Call of the Land
Still with crops, water-logged prairie farmers and ranchers are to receive $448 million under the AgriRecovery program to help deal with devastating flood damage. The federal and three provincial governments say farmers will get $30 an acre for land that couldn't be seeded by June 20 or which was seeded but then flooded by the end of July. In Alberta, it is anticipated that the program will address approximately 375,000 unseeded acres and 125,000 acres where crop was lost due to flooding. Crop producers in Alberta who have who have incurred extraordinary costs as a result of excess moisture and flooding must self-declare for the payment by filling out an application form by September 30, 2011.
There is also a pasture component that will address the inability to access normal pasture for an extended period of time resulting in extraordinary costs to producers. Details are being finalized on that component. Producers will need to apply by filling out an application form. This form must be returned to Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC), who is administering the program. There will also be forms available at AFSC district offices and on-line. Forms will also be mailed directly to those producers that qualify for an unseeded benefit through AFSC’s crop insurance. Livestock producers can also apply for help to cover added costs such as renting pasture and transporting feed or livestock.
