USDA releases environmental impact statement for GE alfalfa

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Dec. 16 that the Animal Plant Health and Inspection Service (APHIS) has released its final environmental impact statement (EIS) that evaluates the environmental effects of deregulating genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa otherwise known as Roundup Ready (RR) alfalfa.

Vilsack also called for a collaborative discussion on strengthening coexistence. He noted that organic, non-GE and GE producers should be able to thrive together. "We will partner with all those who want to roll up their sleeves and work with us and each other to find commonsense solutions to today's challenges," he said.

Vilsack said the timeline should allow for spring planting of alfalfa.
