U.S. gives farmers two years to phase out sodium nitrate
The U.S. National Standards Board met in April in Seattle to consider proposed changes to the U.S. organic rule. Sodium nitrate, or Chilean nitrate was reviewed as part of a 5 year "sunset" provision. The product was not relisted and growers were given two more growing seasons, until 2012 to find an alternative source of nitrogen. The fact that the product is not allowed in EU, Japan or Canadian organic standards was a factor in the decision.
