Save Bill C-474

An important vote on Bill C-474 could come up as early as October 20 in the House of Commons. The Agriculture Committee has presented a procedural motion to the House of Commons requesting a 30-day extension to the Committee’s debate on Bill C-474. If Members of Parliament vote against the extension, the debate on Bill C-474 will be squashed and the Bill will be quickly returned to the House for a final vote on October 22 instead. The Liberals have indicated they will not support Bill C-474!

The Liberals and Conservatives are now working together to stop Bill C-474. Liberal MP Frank Valeriote (Guelph) and Conservative MP Randy Hoback (Prince Albert) have jointly introduced a motion in the Agriculture Committee to start a new study on biotech - but the new study is designed to justify Liberal’s withdrawing support for Bill C-474. The study would be a waste of time and money, designed to distract MPs from the real problems with biotech and give industry a new public relations platform: “That the Standing Committee on Agriculture & Agri-food conduct a study on the status of the Canadian biotechnology sector, in which it travels to the universities across Canada where this technology is primarily being undertaken, and that it recommend, where necessary, legislative, policy and regulatory changes in order to foster an innovative and fertile biotechnology industry in Canada. And that the committee report its findings to the House of Commons.”
