OFC Organic Products Regulation Survey

In the fall of 2010, the Organic Federation of Canada carried out a survey on the impact of the Organic Products Regulations (OPR) on the Canadian organic sector. To move from a voluntary standard to a mandatory regulated system can be seen as a challenge and the OFC wanted to check with the operators and stakeholders if the OPR and the Canadian Organic Standards are now well implemented and understood.

The results of the survey, detailed in the attached survey report that we invite you to read, indicate that many issues still need to be adressed: the certification for imported/exported products, the lack of intraprovincial organic regulations, the various items of the COS that need to be revised, the general level of information about the OPR and the COS that is not very high. The comments issued by the respondants are also very instructive on how operators perceive the new organic regulatory system.

The OFC will use the results of this survey to orient efficiently its action and maintain the growth of the organic industry, which can only happen in a clear regulatory and standard environment.
