NOP amends list of allowable and prohibited substances

COG has told us that effective December 14th, the National Organic Program published a final rule to amend the list of substances that are allowed and prohibited in organic production in the U.S.

The changes include adding:

  • aqueous potassium silicate as an insecticide and for disease control in crops
  • sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate as an algaecide in crop production
  • gellan gum
  • fortified cooking wine as a nonorganic ingredient when organic versions are not commercially available
  • tragacanth gum when not available in organic form

and removing:

  • glycerine oleate
