Summer Field Days
Southern Alberta Field Day with Mans Organics: June 20, 2017
Mans Organics is a very colourful farm full of diverse crops such as organic tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, shallots, garlic, melons, alfalfa and hemp. During the field day, there were several presentations from organic farmers and a team of researchers from AAFC Lethbridge Research & Development Center (Dr. Henry Janzen, Dr. Frank Larney, and Dr. Jamie Larsen) on their work relating to soil carbon, green manures, cereal breeding, perennial grain, and weed management. Participants toured a variety of crops including grain, vegetables & a progressive greenhouse!
Central Alberta Soil Health Workshop with Nicole Masters – June 21 & 22, 2017
Our Event and Program Coordinator, Alice Sech, planned her very first field day with organic farmers Takota Coen & Ryan Cameron, and an agroecologist all the way from New Zealand, Nicole Masters! Throughout the two-day workshop and field day, participants got a better understanding of soil health and soil microbes, the vital role of soil microbes in building resilience, to enhancing water, carbon and nutrient cycles, and using soil organisms and livestock to lift microbial function on the land. We also had the chance to work with soil detective tools in soil pits and learn how healthy soil should look and feel when inspecting with your bare hands!
AB & BC Peace Region Field Day with Jed Franklin – June 26, 2017
Organic Alberta’s Iris Vaisman and Alice Sech attended this field day, visiting Jed Franklin’s organic and veganic farm. Veganic meaning farming techniques without animal inputs. Jed uses alternative methods which include complex crop rotations, plowing down plants such as alfalfa and clover, and growing legumes as necessary to add nitrogen into his soil. When Jed was asked why he converted to organic farming, he explained, “We wanted to raise food to help feed the nation, and as healthfully, as we could.”
