The Liberal motion was supported by members from the NDP and Bloc Quebecois and would therefore have been approved by the Committee to go to the House of Commons for a vote, if the vote had not been delayed. Conservatives had similarly delayed a vote at the earlier March 10 Committee meeting. “Conservatives engaged in obvious delay tactics for two hours to make sure a vote on the motion did not happen,” said Lucy Sharratt of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network. “Conservatives are trying to play both sides of this issue because they know farmers want GM alfalfa stopped, but Conservatives don’t want to cross Monsanto. Presumably, Conservatives delayed the vote so that an election could save them from having to take immediate action to stop GM alfalfa.”
This week, before an election, you can write to the Conservative Agriculture Committee members and/or your Member of Parliament from http://www.cban.ca/alfalfa
Stay tuned to CBAN for election campaign tools that you can use to talk to your local candidate about GM issues and press for a commitment for a moratorium.
